First Law is a hypothetical skateboard company based around the physics of skateboarding. The project was inspired by Dr. Skateboard (Bill Robertson), an educator with his undergrad in history, Spanish and zoology and his Ph.D in Education. He teaches his students physics through skateboarding, has a book called Action Science, performed a TED talk and spoke on the podcast Star Talk. I decided on the name First Law because of Newton’s First Law of motion which states “a body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force.” This stated that things cannot start, stop of change direction by themselves. It takes a forced acting upon them from the outside to cause a change. This is related to skateboarding because a skateboarder is the outside force that causes the skateboard to start, stop and change direction. All of Newton’s laws are present in various tricks. I started the process of designing the skateboard deck by researching the physics of skateboarding. I used the equations and arrows to demonstrate the science involved in the action of skateboarding. I then compiled this into a gridded illustration that demonstrates an Ollie, Half Pipe and Flip. I expanded the design to a shirt, shoes and a sticker.
